Golf Stag Parties in Scotland

Golf Stag Parties in Scotland

Scotland has over 550 golf courses, and it's not a massive country, so there are a lot of golf courses, including some of the most famous and prestigious in the world. That’s almost a golf course for every 10,000 people (Scotland's population is roughly around five and a half million).

Golf in Scotland

There's a golf course for all standards. Golf has become less popular as a sport in Scotland over the last 25 years. Fewer children take it up, and that's a great shame. If you have youngsters yourself, the great news is that golf clubs heavily discount junior fees to attract young players, and the plan is to keep the sport going for many generations.

If the stag is a golfer, then planning around the golf makes sense. I will say that for newbies to golf, it is probably not a good idea to start off playing on a stag do. Some people struggle to pick up and enjoy different sports. I know if it was my stag do in Scotland, and it was planned around watching cricket, then I'd be in for a miserable time. Just as I dislike cricket, many dislike golf. The say is, "It's a good walk, spoiled." You know your stag better than me, so you be the judge, but starting off golfing on a stag could turn sour. It's best if all involved are keen golfers and are around the same standard or just enjoy golfing together. Some of the top clubs require you to have a recognised handicap anyway, so even with a big desire to play your first-ever game of golf anywhere and at St Andrews, it's just not going to happen.

In this post, I will cover some of the best golf courses in Scotland for stag dos, as well as some other ideas for you.

Royal Aberdeen

This club is the 6th oldest in the world. Located just outside of Aberdeen, Green fees are high (£100-£250), but it's a renowned course and has hosted some of the biggest events in Scotland in recent years. Aberdeen is a bustling city, and there is a good nightlife there if you fancy hitting the bars and clubs after your golf.

Gleneagles

There are three championship courses and a 9-holer at Gleneagles. The eyes of the sporting world were focused on there in 2014 when they proudly held the Ryder Cup. Beautiful courses and a stunning location.

Trump International

Located only a few miles from Aberdeen, you could tie this course in with Royal Aberdeen, and that's what many stag parties do. With ambitions to host some of the biggest tournaments in the world, this is a spectacular links golf course.

Loch Lomond

Probably the most beautiful course in this list is Loch Command. Right beside the famous loch, this course is stunning. It hosted the Scottish Open for many years in the 2010s. Being televised, it effectively promoted golf and Scotland.

Turnberry

It is another Trump-owned course, and it's widely regarded as the best golf course in Scotland. At summer prices of over £500 per round, you have to be a good golfer to appreciate the location and prestige of the place.

St Andrews

As the home of golf, St Andrews is steeped in history. The small fife town is famous because of its incredible stories of golfing glory. Known as Tiger Woods's favourite course, it is one of many credits given. A round of golf in the summer costs £340, so less than Turnberry, but St Andrews is the course where you can tell your grandkids a great tale that you have played there. There is student nightlife in St Andrews, but it's a quieter location than the busier big cities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. It's only an hour from these cities, so you can travel for the day to St Andrews.

I hope that's given you a taster of the possibilities of a golfing stag do in Scotland.
